MAKING ONE'S CHOICES FOR LIFE
In 1941, when the war broke out, he was 14. Other boys, his classmates, saw men leaving their village for the front lines – their fathers, elder brothers, uncles. They were looking forward to joining the Army as soon as they turned 17. In 1944, in the 10th grade, there were only four boys left, who sat at the desks along with the girls. The boys could no longer stand by and asked the military commissariat to enlist them in the Red Army. Since the army needed trained soldiers, they were sent to the military aviation communications school in Moscow. Just before their graduation, the war ended. However, the boys decided to become military officers and enroll in officer training. That’s how Yuri Volkov’s military service began. It lasted 33 years.

Cadet Yuri Volkov

“The year drew to a close, and all those, who had turned 17, had long been drafted for military service. But these three boys still studied in the 10th grade: they were told in the military commissariat of an order to allow them to finish school... That was true, but it was a village where people knew each other and the existence of such an order was hard to explain to the locals. It was unbearably difficult for us to continue living in our villages. We were supposed to take part in the war like our classmates. After our repeated requests we were finally told that the decision had been taken to send us all to the military school”.

VICTORY PARADE

On June 24, 1945, the cadet Yuri Volkov took part in the Victory Parade on Red Square.
„... at the Victory Parade in June 1945, we marched in the troops of the Moscow garrison. The columns of WWII frontline soldiers were built on Red Square, while the units of the Moscow garrison – on Manezhnaya Square.”

"Joyful, kind, cheerful, self-confident, we went and formed up. Upon the command Weapon to inspection' we lifted rifles with open bolt on the shoulder and held it ready for inspection."

«…The soldiers and marshals marched on the cobblestone paving, along with the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Baltic Fronts; outside the Mausoleum they threw fascist banners down like junk. But not everyone knows that behind the battle-front veterans were soldiers of the Moscow garrison, including cadets of military schools, students of academies." «Our school was located nearby the Dynamo stadium. Only the best cadets were picked for the parade, we did a lot of drilling, field training. On June 24, we were given a dress uniform and we traveled halfway across Moscow to the parade site. In my rank I was right-flank. So as we marched I saw both members of the government on the platform of the Mausoleum and the Wehrmacht banners below."

MILITARY SERVICE: THE WAR IN KOREA
“Soon after World War II, a ‘break’ began to appear in the relationship between the former allies, the Soviet Union and the United States. Five years later, armed clashes erupted on the Korean peninsula in the Far East. No formal talks were held on this. All actions took place under great secrecy for some time.”

Volkov served for four years as an officer at the Kachinsk Aviation School and at the age of 23 Lieutenant Yuri Volkov as member of the team was sent to North Korea to carry out the mission of military adviser at the Aviation Academy.
A few days later, we were summoned to General Headquarters, where they explained that the three of us were going on a mission as advisers to the Korean Army. Our positions were to be determined by the Air Force Headquarters. No one was supposed to know about that. We were to deposit our Komsomol membership cards with the Komsomol Central Committee and our identity cards – with General Headquarters. I was given a certificate that I was a member of the "Spartacus" sports association. I was also explained that if anything happened on a business trip, I had to claim that I was a Spartacus fan and had nothing to do with the Soviet Army”.

For his service in Korea Yuri N. Volkov was awarded the Order “Red Star” and the Order “For Liberty and Independence” of the Korean People’s Democratic Republic. Unfortunately, the «Red Star» Order was never presented to him.

In 1952, Yuri N. Volkov continued to serve as an officer of the Kharkov Higher Aviation Engineering Military School, where he received his higher education at the Faculty of Radio Engineering.
“I’m thankful to the fate for leading me to this road. In 34 years of service, I never regretted it and I now believe that the situation has helped me to make the right choice”.

SERVICE IN THE STRATEGIC MISSILE FORCES. CREATION OF THE KOSTROMA MISSILE DIVISION

In 1961, Yuri N. Volkov was sent to the city of Kostroma, where he became one of the founders of the 10th Guards Red Banner Order of Suvorov Missile Division. It was an era of «cold war», confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States of America. At that time, the main emphasis was on nuclear weapons, the number of warheads, the development of technologies for the range of missiles and the accuracy of their impact. Yuri N. Volkov served in the 10th Missile Division for 16 years. He retired from the position of commander of the head parts base of the Missile Division with the rank of colonel in 1977.
“We realized we had to ‘entrench’ and wait for the command ‘Open fire!’. Figuratively speaking, the personnel of the military units of the Kostroma Missile Division occupied the trenches and stayed faithfully on alert for 43 long years”.

YURI N. VOLKOV’S CREATIVE LEGACY

Yuri N. Volkov was always keenly interested in the history of his native land and the Volkov family in the context of the history of the country. After retiring, he began to study numerous archival materials and historical literature.

The man who devoted so many years of his life to the defense of our Homeland continues to worry about its fate. He wrote and published 12 books in which he recounts the many wars, in which Russia participated throughout its centuries-long history, and draws important conclusions. He asks current generations to remember what war brings, how it interferes in peaceful lives of ordinary people, separating children from parents, taking and ruining lives. The author warns us how dangerous it can be to be reckless in the defense of one’s country and asks us to show more responsibility for the future.

The chapters of the book devoted to Volkov’s wife, Valentina Kuzminichna, are filled with deep love and empathy.
“…And so, sometime in the early spring of 1943, a man came to the place where the Farafonov’s house used to be, slowly shuffling his tired legs. It was Kuz’ma Filippovich. He sat on the ruins and cried bitterly, without tears, because his eyes had long been cried out. He thought his family had died in the bombing. Mother and daughter did not recognize him at first, so thin, exhausted and aged he was. And when they recognized him, they wept for joy... And then they fixed their house, rebuilt their lives and hoped that the past would never come back even in their bad dreams...”
Volkov Y.N. If we forget the war – the war will come again. – Kostroma. 2010. – P. 241.

Yuri N. Volkov’s books are kept in the Kostroma Oblast Universal Scientific Library. Many of them were written on the basis of materials from the library’s collections, bibliographic references and advice from its staff. Several presentations of Yuri N. Volkov’s books took place with the support of the library management. Among their attendees were representatives of the regional administration, the Veterans’ Council, co-workers, school teachers and students, and the author’s relatives.
