Vasily Ivanovich Strekalov (1922 - 2017) was born in the village of Obyachevo Komi ASSR. The fate of this front-line soldier, as well as the fate of thousands of other Russians who went through the war, is quite typical and at the same time unique and peculiar in its own way. At the beginning of the war almost all the men of their village received summonses. But the skinny 19 years old boy was not drafted. But how can you stop a young man burning with conviction that he must be in the ranks from rash actions? So, completely unexpectedly for his relatives, in November 1941 Vasily was drafted to the front. His fellow villagers thought that he went to see off his friend called up to the army to the nearest village, but the boy disappeared for a long time - until December 1946 – disappeared from native land. The life path this front-line soldier seemed to repeat the lines of the famous song: "We have travelled half of Europe, half of the Earth..."
From that time until the end of the war Vasily Strekalov served as an artillery scout who had to locate enemy firing points before the main army. It was in reconnaissance that Strekalov's short stature helped him in the best possible way: he could be unnoticed in places where it seemed impossible to pass through. Vasily Strekalov went through all the most significant battles of the final period of the war - Korsun-Shevchenkivska, Yasso-Kishenevskaya, Vislo-Sandomirskaya, Aldamskaya, Vislo-Oderskaya. The hero was able to liberate prisoners of concentration camps, and take Berlin, and participate in the operation to capture General Vlasov. Vasily Ivanovich participated in the liberation of Moscow, Bryansk, Kalinin regions, in breaking the blockade of Leningrad, passed through Ukraine, Moldavia, Romania and through all Eastern Europe. He was among the first to liberate concentration camps in Poland. Once, when he opened another concentration camp barracks, he met his relative Ivan Shulepov, with whom he had sat at school with until the 4th grade. He did not immediately recognise him - emaciated and exhausted.
The scout Vasily Strekalov was not afraid of anything, he climbed into the most dangerous places, sneaked into the enemy's lair. It seemed that he conspired, so incredible were sometimes war stories. Once he single-handedly disarmed and captured 31 German soldiers. Another time he captured and brought two vehicles with weapons to the command post. But he later admitted that his incredible bravery was partly due to the fact that he was deadly tired of war.

"All my friends around me were killed. But death seemed to bypass me," Vasily Ivanovich confesses. - Fatigue, hunger, cold, indifference - all this dulled the sense of danger. But I did not respect cowards either. That's why I volunteered to go on reconnaissance alone, because I was not afraid of anything at that time".

Vasily Strekalov reached Berlin, where on the wall of the Reichstag, according to him, among the signatures of Soviet soldiers he left his autograph: «Strekalov from Komi». Only at the end of December 1946, Sergeant Strekalov returned to Obyachevo.

But ruin was waiting for him at home. Hardened in battles, strong young man - Strekalov was in demand everywhere. During his long labour career he worked his way up from collective farm foreman to the director of Syktyvkar wine and vodka factory. Vasily Ivanovich worked at the plant until 1982 (before his retirement), and for 38 years he headed the primary branch of the Syktyvkar Distillery Veterans Council.

A front scout, Vasily Ivanovich was a frequent guest in educational institutions, where he told young people about the war, about his fighting and working days. He also spoke words of farewell to conscripts at meetings at the military enlistment office. Vasily Ivanovich found the right words of advice for each recruit, shared his rich life experience, and was a true role model for the younger generation.
He was awarded twenty orders and medals and battle commendations from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief: the Order of the Red Star, the Patriotic War, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and other awards.

"Together with Vasily Ivanovich we solved issues of military-patriotic education. He was not just a member of DOSAAF of Russia, but in the full sense of the word a friend. Our cadets always listened to his mentoring words, they reached everyone. He was a man of wide soul, a man of concrete and active life position. He did not stay somewhere in the past, but always lived in the present, he is a hero of the present. It is important that he never repeated himself in his talks, he always told new facts. It was interesting and instructive."

Eduard Mostovoy, head of the DOSAAF branch in Komi.
